Ernst & Young Surveys

Interview with Marc Lhermitte, Partner, Ernst & Young Advisory

What is the European attractiveness survey?

The European attractiveness survey was set up seven years ago and has now become widely recognized by our clients, the media and major public stakeholders as one of the most insightful, influential publications on the subject of Europe and its position in the midst of globalization. The European attractiveness survey polls approximately 1000 international senior executives on their perception of the main investment destinations, key location drivers and criteria, globalization issues, future projects and future sectors of investment. In addition to the views and opinions of business leaders, the European attractiveness survey measures FDI projects based on the Ernst & Young European Investment Monitor database (EIM). It shows the reality of foreign direct investment in the manufacturing and services sectors and job creation through FDI across the continent.

Ernst & Young’s 2009 attractiveness survey is clearly of particular significance due to the current global downturn and uncertainty. It will address key issues, such as how the crisis is affecting investment projects, how the European countries can pick up after the crisis, what investment opportunities will emerge from the crisis.

In addition to the European campaign, the Ernst & Young network also publishes several country-specific attractiveness reports, (from Portugal to Japan) to better address the specifics and hot topics of the complex world of FDI and its challenges.

What is the added-value of the World Investment Conference?

The World Investment Conference offers a dynamic base for the joint consideration of issues relating to the attractiveness and competitiveness of Europe, contributing to the development of national and EU strategies for the implementation of the Lisbon agenda. To this end, it brings together all those concerned, including business leaders, academics and representatives of unions and civil society, as well as specialists from regional and national development agencies and representatives of EU member states, the European Commission and the European Parliament.

The success of the previous WIC sessions has established the event as an effective forum for debate, with the participation of some 1 000 high-level international leaders and decision-makers. It draws support from a Think Tank dedicated to the search for practical solutions and concrete proposals to favor effective and assessable European policies for growth, jobs and value.
